America is the world's greatest superpower. They command the political stage and have a massive influence on every other country in the world. American franchises dominate the world's commercial scene. American celebrities influence the different cultures of the world.

Just 100 years ago the world's greatest power was The United Kingdom of Great Britain. In 1870 one quarter of the earth's land surface and one fifth of its population was part of the British Empire. It was the largest empire the world had ever seen. The sun never went down on the British flag. They had a small, professional army that used the latest technologies. They controlled the seas with the world's strongest Navy and dominated world trade.

It can be argued that Great Britain became the world's greatest power after the fall of Napoleon's France in the Battle of Waterloo, 1812, and ended in 1918 at the end of the Great War when America emerged as the world's super power along with Russia.

But my thoughts now turn to the armies America and Great Britain have, and which one is the better and more professional of the two.

The British Army has always been regarded as the most professional and strict army in history, but is that still the case, since they are not now the world's greatest power? The British Army is highly trained and highly motivated, used to both urban conflict and combat in wider environments - deserts, forests, etc.

Men can join the British Army at 16, and everyone spends 26 weeks in basic training. On the contrary, the minimum age for enlistment in the American Army is 17 (for the National Guard); they spend 9 weeks basic training. Every British soldier is specialised in some skill, along with his standard role of a soldier, be it engineering, medicine, logistics, etc. Each soldier forms an important part of a team. Whereas in the US Army many soldiers are not specialized in a particular task and are just grunts.

The number of war crimes committed by American soldiers outnumbers those committed by British soldiers. Friendly fire between both sides in the war in Iraq and Afghanistan has resulted in the deaths of 4 British soldiers and 0 American soldiers. The ratio of enemies killed to troops lost is reportedly higher in the British Army. The number of confirmed Iraqi civilians accidentally killed in action his higher in American statistics. It is also reported that the populations of Afghanistan and Iraq do not have as much resentment to the occupying British forces as they do to the American forces.

HOWEVER:

Morale in the British army is remarkably lower, mainly due to the 'blue-on-blue' incident last August, where an American pilot accidentally dropped a 400kg bomb on a British bunker. But it also due to the fact that the British soldiers do not believe they should be in Iraq, and to a lesser extent Afghanistan.

So, concluding my little study of whose army is more professional, having consulted facts from neutral sources on the internet. I think, although I literally spent 20 mins just looking this up so if you've anything to add do, that the British army is more professional than the US army.

Professionalism? I don't think America would tolerate any of their soldiers hijacking a helicopter and then landing it in their girlfriends backyard.

I agree completely with the whole part about how the US are horrible for friendly fire, and aren't as professionally trained. That's how I see it with Canada and the US as well. They have the numbers, but we have the training. Marines might be an exception, they are more highly trained, but it's a lot less of them.

I never heard about that blue-on-blue incident, that is brutal, makes me dislike the US army even more.

Oh, but one thing to note. The US might have the biggest army, but they are also 9 trillion dollars in debt. I'm just afraid of the US not paying it back, making a 20 trillion dollar army, and then say "We aren't paying it back. You'll have to fight us". Sure the world vs them, the world wins, but with great casualties.

Note: But really, the Isreali army is the best out there. They haven't lost a battle in like 15 years, and are always at war. They are super soldiers. But just small.

I'd say as far the effect on the countries whose in war America always has a better impact and in this day in time our weapons are upgraded, we've been in 2 of the biggest wars to go down in history and yet each time our country has bumped back. and then there's the fact that we have the most powerful government which plays major parts in our wars. so i think in terms of gaining more power from wars in this and the last century America is better.

We have different sectors, just like you!

I also don't understand how getting the things you mentioned - and you were wrong anyway - is relevant to professionalism.

The US army doesn't give the normal recruit a specifc job, I've looked into it.

And Marines, sure, and of course the navy and coast guard and air force and national guard would, which is to be in that section, but then again, so does every other country's similar forces. Including Britian's.
And every country gives you all that stuff.
So you're still tied for the benefits, but the British don't do friendly fire, making them less professional.

Which is awesome, but not what this topic is about: professionalism of conduct,.
