Hang out with them, and pay attention to their needs. Don't try and call it all a charity case, or make it feel like the only reason you tried to get close to them was because you thought something was wrong with them. That conclusion would only make things worse... unless they are ready to admit that they have issues that you are willing to help them out with. Just view it as you are trying to be a good friend, or even a good person. Right now you have to be strong for them, and help them feel better about themselves. Make it comfortable for them to talk to you about their emotions, because that might be at the heart of why they choose their own behaviour. I recommend taking them out for walks, so you always have something to do or talk about without any awkward silences that can prevent you from trying to talk, or prevent any further conversations. In a house for example, they can too easily choose to leave the room, and you always have the fear of saying things too loud for people to hear. Anyone taking a walk should start to feel better, being able to enjoy some fresh air and not feel pressured to rush an answer, or say anything. It can help make it a comfortable environment for your friend. I have taken a walk with one person I remembered, and I probably learnt a lot about them just from that walk. I would have never gotten that much information out of them if we both chose to sit next to each other and chat instead.. I didn't even need a reason to say it all, or have to have problems. Anyone can do it. I seriously think you should give it a try. It's just getting them to come with... that is the problem.
