Did you ever think that before the 1970s lead was a standard ingredient in all paint- including the paint on kid's toys.  No one considered it to be a problem.  We still have many houses who's water comes through lead pipes.

Lead plumbing is often considered one of the main reasons the Roman empire collapsed. Lead in the drinking water will turn you crazy over a long period of time, and it's often blamed for the power mad actions of the great leaders of the era.
