I would recommend you switch from AVG to Avast.

I had AVG and it didn't catch enough, and it was with Vista.  Trashed the install so I started anew with Avast on new format.

Vista's UAC along with Windows Defender is all you should ever need.

Both are shit.  Had to disable UAC for being too intrusive and Defender is shit.  I know from experience.

Get Avast and run a boot-time scan, you'll be surprised what you have.

UAC is one of the most secure settings you can use. I honestly cannot understand how it annoys people to make a couple extra clicks. If you have a half way decent computer, it's instantaneous anyway.

Windows Defender does it's job and is not a resource hog. It does what it's supposed to do, coupled with Vista UAC... The two are all you should ever need.

Unless of course, you never know what your installing half of the time.

I personally scan everything that gets downloaded.  Not to mention I keep a reasonable firewall running.

I guess that's your personal preference... I hate firewalls. The only one I use is built into my router. With UAC and Windows Defender, I have no reason to use a firewall.

I didn't want to quote multiple people, so I'll just make a list.  btw, these are facts.

1. UAC is an extremely good security measure.  While it may look to you like all you have to do is click a button, there's so much going on 'under the hood' which makes it virtually impossible for malware to get past.

2. Windows Defender (WD) is in no way a replacement for anti-virus software or a firewall.  WD can be used as an anti-spyware utility and to monitor startup programs and such.  It will NEVER detect a virus, worm, or trojan horse that hasn't been classed as spyware.  Unless it detects some specified behaviour that WD has been told to watch out for, it will let the virus do whatever it wants.

3. A firewall is used to monitor incoming (and can also monitor outgoing) connections.  The best type of firewall is a hardware firewall (such as a router), as this cannot be compromised by software.  A software firewall is also useful - although personally I tend to stick to the built-in Windows Firewall as, in all honesty, I know how to be secure enough not to get most malware in the first place.

4.  Anti-Virus software, while it can be foregone by careful users, is still an extremely useful thing to have.  I personally would recommend Avast!.
