I am intending to go to the convention, but not to protest. violence solves nothing.

Violent protests solve nothing. They will turn people off to the cause who might otherwise believe in it. I'm a socialist, but there's enough of a stigma against the word as it is without violence and hatred.

Not so.
A common misconception is that Communism and Socialism are the opposite of Democracy. The truth is that they are the opposite of Capitalism. Capitalism, Communism, and Socialism are all compatible with Democracy, just as they are all compatible with Totalitarianism and Dictatorship.

What makes you assume that this protest is going to be violent?
I know of this protest, as it is in my state, and I know of people going. This is a PEACEFUL protest, comprised of peaceful people, many of which are extreme hippies.

Social anarchists protested the DNC with no violence. I don't see why this would be different.
