I work at a Jewish camp.  I myself am not Jewish, but I'm a counselor and most people (including the kids) are.

We have 'orayers' or blessings or sayings in Hebrew each day.  Almost all the time the lady in charge says something that sounds like "Chek la va cha ka shah" and the response is "SHAH!", followed by a similar line and response.

It seems like that saying is especially used when trying to get people to be quiet and use silence?  Cause then everyone quiets down.  Do you knwo what it means or why it's used?

And also we say a prayer before meal and then after.... AND in the morning we sing a song in Hebrew to the Flag/star of David...But I have no idea what it is.  The notes get high and at some point "sofia" is mentioned?

Anyone who is Jewish and knows these Hebrew prayers, can you help me out?

That is hebrew and it literally means 'please be quiet'

The song in Hebrew you mentioned is Israel's national anthem :P

That is really cool!  Thanks for sharing that....I suspected that's what it meant.

Question: Do MOST Jews know what that means? Like is it commonly said in households or just only for people who speak Hebrew?

(BTW. how much Hebrew does the average Jewish person know?, esp. teens/college kids)

the thing with the flag is the israeli national anthem called hatikvah (the hope)

the prayers before and after meals are prayers thanking god for food

and "Sheket Bevakasha" means quiet please, it is used in jewish youth movements.
its used generally like rythems of claps and then kids will shout a line back to get their attention

ne of the kids at the camp would have been more than happy to explain all this to you

sheket bevakasha is normally just said at camps by the leaders to shut the kids up and get their attention

the amount of hebrew really varies. if they go to a jewish school they SHOULD know at least the basics in hebrew to get around in israel.

otherwise just they probs just know iconic words; ie. shalom...

Nah only religous Jews talk Hebrew alot because Jewish prayers are in Hebrew.

Its not commonly said.
Only Jewish people who go to a Jewish school would know some Hebrew.
I think most Jews would be able to recognise Israel's anthem.
