It seems that our obsession with hacking the current iPhone and refusing to pay for expensive contracts is about to be punished as the UK is only going to get very 'limited' stock of the new iPhone 3G.

A deep throat inside one iPhone retailer told Electricpig that just 15% of the iPhones sold since the last price drop have been put on the O2 network - the rest have been hacked and are on rival networks. Apple, the source said, is going to teach UK users a lesson by restricting the number of iPhone 3G devices when it launches on July 11.

The 16GB devices will be the worst hit. Oh, and another bit of bad news, is that the source claims the PAYG iPhone 3G will cost £349, not the more attractive £299 that appeared briefly on O2's web site. That would put the UK pricing more in line with what other European nations will be paying.

Maybe that fake Chinese iPhone isn't so bad after all. Still, it may all be shameless scaremongering since what phone company deliberately wants to sell less phones?.-Martin Lynch

Is this gonna be the first step in corperate wars? are the big companies going to see how much power they really have over a nation?

for years big companies have been getting far more dangerous to nations, imagine if microsoft refused to release windows security updates to uk customers etc, every computer would be at risk from hack attempts, including MOST goverment machines running on windows, have apple just taken the first steps to war?

(yes i know the M$ example is only a small example but i'm sure many other examples could be found, e.g if ICANN decided to stop serving a country DNS Names etc)

Meh, I'm happy with my Jailbroken and unlocked EDGE iPhone. Works for me, and if O2's 3G coverage is as shit as their EDGE coverage, then it won't matter much. I'll just get the iPhone 2.0 update for free.

I somehow doubt our government's network is running on a commercial operating system, ManicD. Back to Apple, though... more fool them. Why do they give a fuck about how much money 02 is losing from their selling handsets? Aside from the whole loss of absolute control over its consumers, which really should be the thing heavily restricted. Apple can fuck off out of Britain for all I care, if they're gonna have a hissy fit about not deciding our other commercial choices.

I somehow doubt our government's network is running on a commercial operating system, ManicD.

Most workstations in most goverment offices are running windows xp, most servers are running server 2003 (migrating to 2008).

Most goverment email is handled by Microsoft exchange servers.

Microsoft have there hands in everything!!!

Ok, there are a few servers dotted here and there, that dont run MS software, internet routers are run on cisco operation systems and DNS servers tend not to be Microsoft, but the vast majority of data handling in the UK is passed through M$ servers and workstations.
