People keep saying psychology, but it really depends on how you want to work with them. If you are interested in therapy aspects of "working with them" then you a probably going to need a degree in the field (at least over hear you do). If you are interested in working to reintegrate them into society (e.g. find them housing, employment, government aid), you should look at sociology/social work. Of course, all of this is American advice...so I don't know how good it is. I read a short piece about this my Sophomore year in college. It stuck around with me long enough for me to do a major speech on it my Junior year for a prepared speaking class. It's a tragedy really...
