ok my parents are Christian
and they go to church
thats all good.
but they have been forcing me to go ever since i was little
and i threw a fit every single time
now im 17 and im done with it.
since i was about 13, they have always threatened to ground me and take away my phone and allowance and everything else if i dont go.
now i dunno about everyone else but that just makes me hate their religion more and feel more inclined to rebel against it.
i ask them why i have to go
and they tell me "because jesus died for your sins"
WHAT THE HELL!?!?
what if i dont beleive that!?
shouldnt i have a chance to find my own religion?!
maybe it would have been Christianity if i hadnt been tortured by it my entire life.

whatever.

18 is right around the corner, and you'll be an adult making adult decisions.

My guess is that they're not going to want to drag an 18-year-old to church.

You think being dragged to church constitutes torture?

My mom does the same thing, only with Catholicism, and I'm only 14.

She says I'm not mature or logical enough to pick my own religion, which is bullshit.

Tell you're parent to shove their religion up there ass if you don't believe the same as they do. Ok maybe not, but they shouldnt be making you go to church if you don't believe in it.

Tortured by it,lol?
I'm a Christian, but I haven't "forced" my kids to go after they decided not to. I felt the same way at that age-nothing there for me. (BTW, "chuch" is just a community of like-minded people. It's not a religion and it's not a person's own spirituality.)

It's pointless to argue beliefs -yours vs theirs. So tell them that you are not going to go until you decide otherwise. Tell them in a respectful manner that you question the beliefs of the church but that you will keep an open mind and return later if you feel the need to. If you get into an argument, no-one wins and no ground is gained. Stay calm and respectful even if they don't. They may not. THis is obviously a strong and central part of the lives THEY lead and they truly believe you woudl be better off at church. Respect their view before you can expect respect for yours.

Parents should expect this from many teens. Teens should be questioning and challenging authority. Sometimes the challenges are met or the questions asked are answered well. Sometimes not.

No, I get to sleep in on Sundays. But if I was I wouldn't throw a juvenile tantrum, just like I don't throw a tantrum every time I'm asked to do the dishes or tidy the house or walk the dog when it's spitting sleet outside.

All you have to do is go to church and sit there. You don't have to believe deep down in your soul, you just have to show a little respect for your parents' beliefs and decisions. That should not be difficult for a 17 year old.
